Back-up Mass is one of the three Power Principles of Kenpo.
Back-up Mass is essentially - power amplification on a linear path, using one's body mass aligned with a move.
Body Alignment is what makes Back-up Mass possible.
Back-up Mass differs from Gravitational Marriage in that Back-up Mass is executed on a primarily Horizontal Plane.
Back-up Mass differs from Gravitational Marriage in that Back-up Mass is used primarily in the dimension of depth.
Back-up Mass differs from Torque in that Back-up Mass works on a linear path.
Back-up Mass can be used in conjunction with any of the other Power Principles.
Back-up Mass is only one element in the generation and enhancement of power. See power for more information on this subject.
Back-up Mass can be broken down into the following categories: a.Forward - when the mass of the body is used behind the weapon. b.Reverse - when the mass of the body is used in front of the weapon. c.Isolated - when only the mass of the weapon is used and is aided only by the speed of the weapon employed. d.Opposing - when the mass and power of one weapon is used in opposition against the mass and power of second simultaneous weapon. This form of Back-up Mass is categorized as vise-Like. |
Example(s): |
|
|
Forward A straight heel-palm strike, using either arm or both, to an opponent's body would demonstrate Back-up Mass in a forward direction. Reverse A pulling, inverted, vertical, back-knuckle strike to the back of the opponent's head, while the opponent is facing you, would demonstrate Back-up Mass in a reverse direction. Isolated A whip, slice, or rake to the opponent's eye(s) would demonstrate isolated Back-up Mass. Opposing A straight heel-palm strike to the face of an opponent, executed simultaneously with a pulling, inverted, vertical, back-knuckle strike to the back of the opponent's head, while the opponent is facing you, would demonstrate opposing Back-up Mass. |
Derivation: |
|
|
This term is derived from the fact that the mass of the body, aligned with the weapon, backs-up a move when this power principle is implemented. |
