Category

A single division or group in a scheme of classification, derived through analysis and correlation of common conceptual attributes, characteristics, and/or physical movement.

Simply put, a category is a complete group related items

 

A category is created to highlight and draw attention to the commonality of the individual items of the category - typically for the purpose of analysis or execution.

 

In Kenpo, it is a common practice to analyze and determine all the ways of doing something, and to group them together into a category, for further analysis. See Category Completion for more information on this subject.

Example(s):

 

Punches are an example of a category that is defined by the common attribute that each strike with the front of the first two knuckles of a fist.
