The major purpose of a backstop is to prevent the target from moving away from the striking portion of the sandwiching maneuver by bracing the target and/or opposing the striking force.
A backstop is usually stationary and can be any Environmental Object.
When the backstop is not stationary, it can quickly become a gray area as to which portion of a sandwiching maneuver is the backstop and which portion is striking. In which case, both portions of the sandwich would be striking and both would be a backstop. |

A heel-palm strike to the opponent's head while their head was resting against a wall, would demonstrate the use of a wall as a backstop. |
