Basics Division

The division of American Kenpo that deals with the fundamental motions of the system.

Comments:

Basics are the fundamental building blocks of the motion of American Kenpo.

Basics are the predefined single motions that may be articulated and isolated from a sequential flow of motion.

All motion can be broken down into one or more basics. Therefore, it could be said that all martial arts systems are just a combination of basics to meet a specific goal or series of goals.

There are three (3) major divisions of American Kenpo, they are:

1)Basics

2)Self-Defense

3)Freestyle

Basics can be broken down into the following categories:

a.stances

b.blocks

c.strikes

d.other maneuvers (i.e. body maneuvers, foot maneuvers, etc.)

e.specialized moves and methods

Basics get their name from the following attributes:

a.Side (Left / Right)

b.Method of Execution

c.Angle of Execution (Inward, Outward, Upward, Downward, Diagonal - Forward, Backward)

d.Part of anatomy used

The Forms and Sets are part of the basics division. They are often referred to as: "the moving basics".

See Basics section.
