Blocks

A distinct category of a basic which is distinguishable by the intent of being used primarily defensively - which uses contact, position, the environment, and/or environmental object(s) to redirect, terminate, obstruct, prevent, restrain, hinder, cushion, or otherwise thwart any offensive maneuver.

Comments:

In layman's terms, a block is a generic term for any measure used to stop an offensive maneuver.

Blocks cover a wide range of defensive motion. The common usage of block usually denotes a striking block, but that is a narrow view of the full implementation of this broad subject. Blocks also include all forms of Checks, Covers, and even Positions and Postures.

Blocks are most commonly employed as a reactive response, rather than a pro-active maneuver. But, there is a whole section of study of pro-active maneuvers being used as a block (see previous statements).

Blocks are not limited to any set of extremities or body parts, and can be executed with the upper (Arms and Hands) extremities, lower (Legs and Feet) extremities, body, or head,

Additionally, many blocks can be executed with a variety of different Methods of Execution, including (but not limited to):

Thrust

Hammer

Hook

Roundhouse

Lift

Loop

Scoop

See Defensive Reaction for more information on defensive options.

Although the use of the arms and hands are the most common method for effecting a block, blocks are not limited to just the upper extremities, and can include: any extremity (upper or lower), the body, the head, and/or environmental objects.
