Striking (Blocks)

A distinct category of Blocks which is physically distinguishable by using opposing contact to effect the maneuver.

Comments:

This is the standard category of Blocks that most people think of when the term is used.

The standard definition for this type of block is:

a.force against force

b.against an offensive weapon in-flight

c.without the intent to cause injury

The striking blocks are sometimes only distinguishable from the striking version of the same maneuver by determining intent (i.e. whether offensive or defensive).

Striking blocks typically create an Angle of Deflection, but this is not a requirement.

One characteristic that many assume is a prerequisite of this category of block, but isn't, is that a closed hand is required.

Another characteristic that many assume is a prerequisite of this category of block, but isn't, is that it is executed with the arms and hands.

The other parts of the body that typically can be used to create this category of block are:

arm - using:

forearm (various contact points - both inside, outside)

hand

elbow (inside, outside, tip, top, bottom)

foot - using:

ball of foot

foot-sword (side of foot)

heel (various contact points - front, side, bottom)

instep

leg - using (at various contact points):

knee (various contact points - inside, outside, tip, top, bottom)

shin (various contact points - both inside, outside)

thigh (various contact points - both inside, outside)

calf

body - using (at various contact points):

hip

buttox

hip

side

shoulder (various contact points - front, back, tip)

head - using (in specialized instances):

crown

forehead

side

And, with each part of the body, the block usually can be executed in the following directions:

horizontal (inward / outward)

vertical (upward / downward)

diagonal (inward / outward - upward / downward)

Additionally, many of these blocks can be executed with a variety of different Methods of Execution, including (but not limited to):

Thrust

Hammer

Hook

Roundhouse

Lift

Loop

Scoop

Given the numerous potential contact points and directions available to effect the maneuver, one can easily see that the potential for creating a list of all possible striking blocks is daunting. This is why only the blocks included in the original written curriculum are individually listed in this section.

Derivation:

Striking blocks derive their name from the similar to its offensive equivalent - the strike.
