Positioned (Blocks)

A distinct category of Blocks which is physically distinguishable by using position (not contact) to effect the maneuver.

Comments:

This is the most common type of passive block. By passive it is meant that the positioning of the block is to anticipate motion, not react to it.

Although the technical term for this category of block is positioned, it is more commonly referred to as a cover.

The easiest way to think about positioned blocks is that they are the accompanying arm and hand positions of stances.

Positioned blocks can be effected with any extremity of the body, and in certain circumstances, effected with other components of the body, or the body itself.

Positioned blocks can be from front weapons, rear weapons, and/or a combination of weapons simultaneously.

Positioned blocks can be effected against a specific potential weapon and/or a general zone of protection.

Technically speaking, once a positioned block makes contact, it is considered a check.

Positioned blocks are a specific method of executing a check. They technically differ from the standard check in that they do not make contact, and is rather positioned in such a way as to derive a similar effect as the standard check. Even though both are considered positioned blocks.

The cover is often referred to as a check. This is because covers are checks. They are just a specific type of check. Although referring to a cover as a check is technically correct, it is less specific in nature.

a)A check relies upon contact to be effective, where a cover relies solely upon positioning to be effective

b)A check uses contact to prevent, hinder, detain, or delay motion by the opponent
