First Cousin/Second Cousin

An idiom describing a subset of the Family Grouping concept - which relates the first, second, third, etc. moves of a Self-Defense Technique based upon a related, but unlike, Father Move.

Comments:

First Cousin/Second Cousin Moves, in and of themselves, are typically not related in any way - But a relationship is created on the fact that the subsequent moves are executed from an originating move of a Self-defense Technique, and this originating move can be compared, contrasted, and related in some way to another originating move of another Self-defense Technique.

A First Cousin Move is the originating move of a Self-defense Technique that is related in some way to an originating move of another Self-defense Technique.

A Second Cousin/Third Cousin/etc. Move is the second, third, etc. move that is executed after a First Cousin move.

The originating move of either the first or second Self-defense Technique is usually, by default, the first move of the Self-defense Technique - But this does not always have to be true.  It is possible to start the relationship at any point during the execution of a Self-defense Technique.

See Family Grouping for more information on this subject.

Example(s):

Situation: The opponent executes a right straight punch.  In response, the practitioner steps forward into a left neutral bow with a left inward block to the outside of the opponent's right arm, while their right arm hangs naturally at their side.  In this situation, the left arm would be the father move (the initial defensive move), while the right arm would be the mother move (the opposite arm's position).

Contrast: If the practitioner were to execute an inward parry instead of an inward block, the initial move would be considered a (First) Cousin Move to the first move of the original response.  All subsequent moves would therefore be considered Second Cousin/Third Cousin/etc. Moves.

Derivation:

The concept of First Cousin/Second Cousin derives from the idea of a family, where the mother/father can have siblings, which in turn can have offspring, that can be related back to original mother/father offspring.
