This type of rule can be thought of as a rule of expression. Guidelines one follows of their own volition for better adherence to their principles.

 

In analytical terms, rules differ from principles in that they are not fundamental building blocks of a system. Instead, they are manifestations of principles in order to adhere to them.

 

In this context, a rule is a proposal for proper conduct or action for a specific system.

 

Rules which are generally adhered to, but are departed from in a number contexts are commonly referred to as a General Rule. This is to distinguish it from rules that are almost always true, except in very limited circumstances.

This type of rule can be thought of as a punitive rule.

 

Rules of this type are more commonly enforced by an external individual or commission. One which is give authority to provide some sort of punishment for not adhering to the rule. Although, the individual can enforce them on their own.

 

Probably the most common areas in which these types of rules are applied are:

The rule "always seek the upper hand" means that one should always try to keep their hands physically above of the opponent's. But, if the opponent's hands are raised high, directly above their head, it is obvious that this rule, in this instance, can be disregarded.

Striking to the groin in many tournaments is considered against the rules. Doing so is often penalized in some way (such as disqualification of point reduction).
