Generally speaking, being tight during the execution or response to maneuvers should only occur for brief periods of time, and mostly during the contact period of the maneuver.
From an American Kenpo perspective, being tight can be a detrimental to physical motion, due to the fact the contracted muscles will restrict motion and waste energy. Although there is an opposite train of thought that suggests that remaining tight makes one more physically impervious to offensive maneuvers and strikes. |
