Changing of the Guard-slang


Sparring specific slang describing the continual changing of hand and foot positions during combat.

 

Comments:

 

This method of sparring is often employed by individuals overly conscious of defense against attack.

 

This tactic can also be used effectively to deceive range and create offensive openings.

 

Benefits of continually relocating body parts:

a.Keeps areas of the body covered that would otherwise be exposed

b.Depending upon timing, can keep an  opponent's attacking potential confounded

c.Can keep offensive maneuvers hidden in defensive maneuvers

 

Problems with continually relocating body parts:

a.Depending upon timing, can help the opponent to coordinate offensive maneuvers

b.Expends energy

c.Can create positions where defensive and/or  offensive maneuvers are hindered or impaired

 

Derivation:

 

The term is taken from the fact that the competitor constantly "changing their guard".
