Apprentice Black Belt

A practitioner who is permitted by their instructor to wear a black belt, but has not been fully evaluated and certified by a board of examiners or recognized by a certifying organization.

Comments:

Some instructors don't permit Apprentice Black Belts and some do.  Among the instructors that don't permit Apprentice Black Belts, the prevailing attitude is typically "either you are a black belt or you're not - there is no in between."

Often an Apprentice Black Belt is given under special circumstances or certain conditions.

As of this writing, there is no special visible indicator that a practitioner is an Apprentice Black Belt.  This may be one of the major reasons why certain instructors frown upon this special ranking status.
