Variation #1 is generally considered destructive.
Variation #2 is considered non-destructive.
Variation #1
The transition between Destructive Fans and Dance of Death, and sides of Dance of Death are altered. This variation is accomplished by mumbling the transitional stances during the transitions (#1a) and exaggerating the circles and changing (dropping) the final positioning of the block / ridge-hand sequence of the technique (#1b). This variation basically comes down to an argument of an emphasis on stylized execution over original design (idealized).
(Note: This variation is part of the Santa Monica circles general variation)
Variation #2
Another, similar, yet less physically dramatic variation is to continue the rotation of the blocking hand (front hand) in such a manner as to make contact with the striking ridge-hand (i.e. finishing in a horizontal orientation vs a vertical orientation). This variation comes down to an argument of emphasis of information over original design.
Rationale For
#1 - The rationale for this variation (both specific and general) is to be more visually appealing to the observer.
#2 - The rationale for this variation is to accentuate the figure 8 pattern of both arms to make the information more obvious to the practitioner.
Rationale Against
#1 - The rationale against this variation is that it departs from the original design and information of the form.
#2 - The rationale against this variation is that it departs from the original design and may lead to mumbling of the maneuvers. Also, it cuts down on the path of travel for the following maneuver (back-knuckle).
