This variation is generally considered destructive.
The initial block of the technique Darting Leaves is changed. This variation is accomplished by executing the block with the hand open; or executed with the hand closed initially, but completed with the hand open. This variation basically comes down to an argument of an emphasis on realism (stylized) over theme (idealized).
Rationale For
The rationale for this variation is to add more margin for error in execution. Execution with the hand open (or completed with the hand open) provides more Margin for Error than with the hand remaining closed. Secondarily, execution of the block in this manner would be unique to this maneuver and would add a unique variation (category completion) to the blocks of the forms.
Rationale Against
The rationale against this variation is that more Margin for Error it is not necessary. Many of the blocks executed within the forms are done with the hand closed.
