1) | height - mid chest level |
2) | depth - elbow bent (forearm parallel to body) |
3) | width - extended to Outward Block width |
1) | hand - horizontal (palm parallel to ground) |
2) | wrist kept straight (not bent up / down and / or side-to-side) |
3) | elbow directly in-line with fist (horizontally) |
5) | upper body / hips - offset Horse rotation (very slightly turned to side) |
6) | legs / feet - offset Horse rotation (directly forward) |
iii) | Point of Contact - index / middle finger knuckles |
iv) | stance - offset Horse / do not allow: |
1) | over rotation of body / feet |
2) | improper weight distribution |
3) | feet not remaining flat to floor |
b) | proper formation - weapon (hand): |
i) | fingers - standard fist (tightly bent and kept together to form Compact Unit)) |
1) | wrapped under bent fingers (Compact Unit) |
2) | do not allow to separate from contact with fingers |
i) | proper Method of Execution - Thrusting |
ii) | improper execution - not at proper speeds / methods: |
1) | executed too slow (transforms into push with knuckles) |
2) | executed too fast (stance adjustment unable to keep up with strike) |
3) | executed too tense (unable to achieve proper 'snap' of strike) (strike looks 'pushed' out) |
4) | strike not tensed at Point of Contact (improper timing / never tensed) |
iii) | proper execution - execute directly to target (prevent arching line of travel) |
Form Specific
i) | attempt to align shoulder behind weapon - causing over rotation of stance |
Comments
a) | One of the most common execution errors is to not maintain a proper offset horse, but to rotate into a neutral bow or a forward bow and/or allow the rear heel to come off of the floor during this process. The straight punches in Short Form Two are purposely delivered on an angle with only the elbow in-line with the punch, but not the rest of the body. This is done purposely for the minimization of torque and the maximization of back-up mass during the execution of these maneuvers i.e. to isolate the power principle back-up mass. |
Note: See Stance Errors - Offset Horse section for information on this subject.

Example of a proper straight punch

Example of proper punch formation

Examples of improper Straight Punch - weapon formation / angle
(formation - tucked thumb / hanging pinky finger)
(wrist: vertical angle - over bent)
(wrist: horizontal angle - contact with wrong knuckles)

Examples of improper punch execution
(improper height - high / low, depth - close / far, fist rotation - not horizontal)
