Straight Punch

a)proper alignments:
i)dimensions:
1)height - upper abdomen to lower shoulder level
2)depth - elbow bent (forearm parallel to ground)
3)width - directly ahead
ii)body alignments:
1)hand - horizontal (palm parallel to ground)
2)wrist kept straight (not bent up / down and / or side-to-side)
3)elbow directly in-line with fist (horizontally)
4)shoulders - relaxed
5)upper body / hips - offset Horse to Forward Bow rotation
6)legs / feet - offset Horse to Forward Bow rotation
iii)Point of Contact - index / middle finger knuckles
iv)stance - offset Horse to Forward Bow positioning / do not allow:
1)over rotation of body / feet
2)improper weight distribution
3)feet not remaining flat to floor

b)proper formation - weapon (hand):
i)fingers - standard fist (tightly bent and kept together to form Compact Unit)
ii)thumb:
1)wrapped under bent fingers (Compact Unit)
2)do not allow to separate from contact with fingers

c)execution:
i)Method of Execution - Thrusting
ii)execute directly to target (prevent arching line of travel)
iii)improper execution:
1)incorrect speeds / methods:
A)executed too slow (transforms into push with knuckles)
B)executed too fast (stance adjustment unable to keep up with strike)
C)executed too tense (unable to achieve proper 'snap' of strike) (strike looks 'pushed' out)
D)strike not tensed at Point of Contact (improper timing / never tensed)

Form Specific

a)improper alignments:
i)side Horse:
1)attempt to align shoulder behind weapon - causing over rotation of stance
2)not punching to proper height (shoulder)
ii)Forward Bow:
1)over reach with strike, causing over rotation
2)under rotation into Forward Bow
3)punching too high (parallel to floor)
ii)Step Through:
1)over reach with strike, causing over rotation
2)under rotation into Forward Bow positioning
3)not keeping base stance flat on floor
4)not keeping height constant (bobbing)
5)punching too high (parallel to floor)

Comments

a)Common errors:
i)side Horse:
1)not maintaining a proper offset horse, but to rotate into a neutral bow or a forward bow and/or allow the rear heel to come off of the floor during this process. The straight punches in Long Form Two in this section are purposely delivered on an angle with only the elbow in-line with the punch, but not the rest of the body. This is done purposely for the minimization of torque and the maximization of back-up mass during the execution of these maneuvers i.e. to isolate the power principle back-up mass.

Note: See Stance Errors - Offset Horse section for information on this subject.

ii)Step Through:
1)not maintaining a flat base foot while kicking and punching simultaneously, but lifting to just the ball of foot
2)not punching parallel to floor, but rather punching too high (usually at shoulder to face level)
