Obscure Focal Points

1)

Form Five implements the use of obfuscated maneuvers.

Form Five contains maneuvers that are considered obfuscated or purposely hidden. This action can be generally defined as maneuvers that are specifically performed differently within the form than would otherwise be executed in a combative or realistic situation. This is generally done in an effort to obscure the true nature of the maneuvers to the casual observer; but also relies upon the maneuvers being taught correctly (for a combat situation) to the practitioner by an informed instructor.

These maneuvers are demonstrated in the following self-defense techniques (Note: only major maneuvers included in illustration):

i)

Destructive Fans

The overhead-claw is omitted (instead brought to chamber)

The final punch is executed without a shift to a forward bow

ii)

Dance of Death

The flip of the opponent is obfuscated with the hand positioning

iii)

Back Breaker

Ending of technique is eliminated (due to equivalent execution elsewhere in the form)

iv)

Sleeper

The initial transitional maneuver (framing) can be interpreted to be used against a kick by the potential opponent, followed by a punch

The heel stomp is moved to the beginning of the sequence (after the transitional framing maneuver), rather than later in the sequence; as the execution is commonly done outside the form

The step forward (after the ridge-hand maneuver) may be exaggerated by lifting the foot slightly off the ground and re-planted at its final location (traveling on a horizontally circular arc)

The entire back-knuckle / heel-palm sequence is executed to impractical angles

v)

Falling Falcon

The end of the technique is replaced with the three-on-line theme (see #4 below)

vi)

Circling the Horizon

The initial maneuver (outward back-knuckle) is done as an insert to clear any potential offensive weapons (instead of stepping off the line of attack); as can be executed as a variation to the base technique sequence outside the form

The final maneuver (drawing of the foot backward) is done instead of drawing the body forward; as is commonly done as part of an extension to the base technique sequence outside the form

vii)

Leaping Crane

The cocking of your retracting foot may be interpreted as an instep kick (to the potential opponent's inner knee area)

The replant after the side kick should be executed as a stomp (onto the potential opponent's Achilles tendon area)

The final neck breaking sequence is executed to impractical angles

The replant after the chicken kick should be executed as a stomp (onto the potential opponent's Achilles tendon area)

2)

The Isolation sequences of Form Five have characteristics that other isolation sequences within other forms do not

The isolation sequences of Form Five have the following unique characteristics:

i)

The isolation sequences are lower body maneuver based, rather than upper body maneuver based. As such, the upper body is isolated from the lower body and held throughout the execution of the maneuver sequence (in a cup and saucer, chambered position) - a direct opposite of other isolation sequences within other forms; where the lower body is held throughout the maneuver sequence (in a horse stance) and the upper body performs the maneuvers.

ii)

The first part of the first isolation (1a) transitions between two different self-defense techniques (Leap of Death / Back Breaker) and the second part (1b) transitions between the right and left side of a self-defense single technique (Back Breaker).

iii)

The second isolation (2a-b) is wholly contained within a self-defense technique (Hopping Crane).

iv)

The third isolation (3a-b) is wholly contained within a self-defense technique (Falling Falcon).

v)

The third isolation (3a-b) is comprised of hidden maneuvers.

vi)

Isolation #1 transverses a left-to-right (left-flank to right-flank) pattern (1a), then a right-to-left (right-flank to left-flank) pattern (1b) on (two) parallel lines (that run side-to-side)

Isolation #2 only moves on a forward (rear to front) pattern (2a-b) on (three) parallel lines (that run back-to-front).

Isolation #3 does not move, but maneuvers on the same line (point) on a right-to-left (right-flank to left-flank) and then on a left-to-right (left-flank to right-flank) orientation.

3)

Form Five transposes maneuvers from one technique to another.

The stomp maneuver at the end of Back Breaker is transposed to the beginning of Sleeper, and is converted from a reverse stomp to a forward stomp.

4)

Form Five has the theme of three-on-line

The theme three-on-line is demonstrated a number of times throughout the form, from different combinations of execution. These variations include: different weapons (upper / lower weapons), different angles, different backing methods, different timings, different alignments, and more. This theme is primarily expressed as follows (Note: only major variation details included in explanation):

i)

Salutation

Executed with both hands on an upper front to lower rear line (downward diagonally toward you)

ii)

Destructive Fans

Executed with same hand on a vertical line to same depth (horizontal / vertical / horizontal), but to different heights

iii)

Dance of Death

Executed with alternating feet on a (horizontal) diagonal line (forward / forward / backward)

iv)

Leap of Death

Executed with feet and hands on a horizontal line (downward / downward / upward)

v)

Isolation 1 (Leap of Death / Back Breaker)

Executed with alternating feet on a horizontal (left-to-right / right-to-left) line

vi)

Back Breaker

Executed with lower and upper weapons on vertical line with offset in timing (middle / middle / upper)

vii)

Hopping Crane (Isolation 2)

Executed with feet (not completely alternating on horizontal (back-to-front) line

viii)

Sleeper

Executed with alternating hands on vertical (downward) line to same spot horizontally

ix)

Brushing the Storm

Executed with same hand on vertical line to same depth (diagonally upward / diagonally upward / horizontal), but to different heights

x)

Falling Falcon (Isolation 3)

Executed with same foot on horizontal (left-to-right / right-to-left), circular (vertical) arc to same spot vertically

xi)

Circling the Horizon

Executed with same hand on vertical line to same depth (diagonally upward / horizontal / diagonally downward), but to different heights

xii)

Leaping Crane

Executed with hand, foot, elbow on vertical line to same depth (diagonally downward / horizontal / horizontal), but to different heights

xiii)

Close

Executed with both feet toward the left rear flank [composed of the final chicken kick of Leaping Crane and the final step out (with left foot)]
