Cat stances always have the front foot in a constant state of readiness.

The standard width of a cat stance is Toe-Heel Alignment.  But, Width is not always used as a physical determinant in cat stances.

Derivation:

The term cat is taken from the kung-fu (gung-fu) animal styles, which imitated different animals.  In this case, the cat stance resembles a cat ready to pounce.
