This variation is generally considered destructive.
The initial maneuver of Fatal Cross is varied by not executing the double hooking "shape of the crane" parries backward on a linear path, but instead on an outward, horizontal circular path.
Rationale For
The rationale for executing the maneuver on a circular path is that the circular path will divert the potential opponent's hands away from their potential target (your body) quicker, giving a greater degree of confidence in success of the diversion.
Rationale Against
This maneuver along with the follow-up maneuver, executed using the circular path, changes information that is demonstrated by the linear version of the same series of maneuvers. Furthermore, executing the parries in a circular fashion can start a re-orbit of the potential opponent's arms in double, vertical circles, up and toward your head. And, as a general rule of American Kenpo, the execution of a maneuver that creates this effect (i.e., re-orbiting) should be avoided if possible or when impractical.
