Appendix E - Addendums and Further Insights

Note 1

Even though the execution illustration states that there are transitory twist stances, this stance is purposefully omitted from the basics analysis of Short Form Two. This is because they are primarily executed as a precursor to the block and can be interpreted as part of the foot maneuver - not as an independent, transitory stance. Their inclusion in the illustration is for the sake of clarity and detail in execution. But, if one were to include the twist stance as a minor (transitory) stance of the form, it would be analyzed as a "preview of things to come" for Long Form Two.

Due to the positioning prior to (cup and saucer) and the Path of Travel of the execution of the Outward block and Middle-knuckle strikes during the execution of the form, it can be considered that these two maneuvers are reverses of one another. If the form is executed without the cup and saucer positioning (i.e. without the 'V' step) the positioning of the Middle-knuckle strike changes (Point of Origin) and this effects the path the Middle-knuckle strike travels and thus alters whether the strike remains a reverse or not. In this second case (without the 'V' step) the left Middle-knuckle strike would only be an opposite, not a reverse.

Due to the Heel-palm being executed in sync with the step-through, there is a large degree of torque being added to this strike. It is arguable that because of the timing of the delivery of this specific maneuver, torque is just as important a Power Principle as back-up mass. Unlike other elements of the form where the Power Principle for a specific strike is primarily or completely isolated, this strike does not isolate it's major Power Principle. The body alignment necessary for this strike to be executed properly positions back-up mass as its major Power Principle, displacing torque.

It is arguable that the sequence of the Extended Outward Block / Half-knuckle sequence does not reverse the power principles demonstrated in the Downward Block (torque) / Heel-palm (back-up mass) sequence. This is due to the directionality of the Extended Outward Bock. In this section of the form, the foot maneuver places the directionality of the body toward the 1:30H and 10:30H in the first and second halves of the sequences, respectively. But, the block travels toward the 3:00 and 9:00 direction, respectively - i.e. not in exactly the same direction. One could argue that the alignment for back-up mass is incorrect and therefore places the major power principle as torque - not back-up mass. One way to correct this issue is to execute the Extended Outward block in the same direction as the body momentum. This would correct the alignment issue, but would then alter the type of block executed from a standard Extended Outward block to a modified Extended Outward block - due to the altered directionality and alignment of the block.

Technically speaking, the Extended Outward block can arguably be said to be outside of the Outer Rim and / or Invisible Box. But, with the inner edge of the hand touching the outer edge of the boundary line, this distinction is generally considered to be a technicality. And, for the purposes of analysis is overlooked as such. From this point of view, the block is considered to be on the outer edge of the Outer Rim and not breaking the Economy of Motion principle.
