a) not obeying Economy of Motion principle
i) making a cock before execution of block
ii) executing blocking outside the outer rim/invisible box
iii) chamber motion for downward block done too high (face height instead parallel to ground)
b) not obeying the rule of Margin for Error
i) upward block done like chicken wings, no torque, just arm lifting
ii) not anchoring the elbow on vertical outward blocks
iii) not keeping the vertical outward block vertical – i.e. over reaching
c) improper alignments:
i) inward block
1) not at eye-brow level
2) not extended to opposite shoulder
3) not extended to proper depth
4) execution angle not forward at 45 degrees
ii) vertical outward block
1) not at eye-brow level
2) not extended to same shoulder
3) palm not facing direct toward you
iii) upward block
1) not ending with angle of deflection
2) not raising block to proper height
3) not extending block to opposite shoulder
4) not ending with fist positioned (palm facing directly forward) forward at 45 degrees away from you
iv) downward block
1) not parallel to front knee after execution
2) not extended to same shoulder
3) palm not facing straight downward
4) 'locking out' elbow during and after execution of block
d) double factors:
i) crossing center line with upward block double factor
ii) not crossing center line with vertical outward double factor
iii) downward block double factoring not executed palm up (instead palm down)
e) executing two hammering inward blocks (instead of a hammering and thrusting)
f) hand is not completely closed when executing blocks (minor and/or major)
g) not executing the blocks smoothly - i.e. mechanical / staccato motion
Examples of bad Inward Blocks
(improper angle, width, and height - high / low)
Examples of bad outward Blocks
(improper width, angle, and shrugged shoulders)
Examples of bad upward Blocks
(leaning, improper transition, and improper angle)
Examples of bad Downward Blocks
(improper height - high / low and leaning)
