General Stance Errors

a)improper alignments / dimensions:
i)improper stance width (too narrow / wide)
ii)improper stance depth (too close / far)
iii)improper stance height (knees not bent enough or too much)

 

b)improper rotation:
i)improper upper body rotation (over / under rotation)
ii)improper hip rotation (over / under rotation)
iii)improper foot rotation (over / under rotation - for either or both feet)

 

c)improper weight distribution:
i)improper center of mass over feet:
1)positioned to far forward / backward
2)positioned to far toward toes / heels
ii)leaning in stance:
1)leaning forward / backward
2)leaning side-to-side

 

d)improper positioning:
i)head not facing correct direction
i)muscles not relaxed:
1)shoulders not relaxed (hunched)
2)overall muscles not relaxed (too tense)
ii)improper arm/hand positioning
iii)improper foot positioning

 

Note: Typically arm/hand and head positioning is not considered part of stance analysis. But, because one of the key goals of American Kenpo forms is the proper coordination between the upper and lower body, these are mentioned here and in the other relevant sections of this chapter.

 

Note: Certain general errors that are more commonly seen for a specific type of stance (such as improper alignments) may be repeated in that stance's section. This is to call attention to the error and how common it is for that specific type of stance.
