Because Long Form One adds complexity over Short Form One, it, by definition, adds areas in which the form can be varied. This section lists a few of the common non-destructive variations that are commonly taught.
Some instructors teach kia's with the execution of the punches and at other places throughout the form. Most do not.
Many instructors teach the timing between the block / punch sequence in the first section of the form be executed with the same time gap - i.e. 1-2. Many instructors teach the timing should emphasize the power of the punch - i.e. 1...2.
Most instructors teach that the triple block section should be executed with a timing gap between each group of blocks - i.e. 1-2-3...4-5-6...7-8-9...etc. But, some instructors teach that the triple block section should be executed with a regular beat - i.e. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-etc.
Most instructors teach the timing of the isolation execution with a regular beat - with each maneuver of the isolation given the same time span - i.e. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-etc. Yet, some instructors teach the timing with a time gap between each grouped maneuver - i.e. 1-2-3...4-5-6...7-8-9...etc. And, still others differ the timing gaps between the blocks and the punches.
Many instructors teach that the blocks and punches of the isolation should be executed looking straight ahead. While other instructors insist that one should look at what they are punching and therefore look in the direction of each punch. While looking is perfectly acceptable, turning from the horse is not. Turning, by definition, eliminates the horse, and breaks the definition of an isolation; and therefore should be avoided.
As one can clearly see, in Long Form One, timing seems to be the most common type of variation to the form. This is due to the fact that the form is still not very complex, and the timing is a simple 1-in-1 beat.
One other common type of variation also needs to be mentioned. These are variations that are not considered to be permanent,
